50th Reunion Memorial Service Print Email

Memorial Church, Wednesday morning.

The Memorial Service, when we gather to remember our deceased classmates, has become a central part of the reunion for many of us. We continue our practice of having classmates stand one by one and read the names of those who lived and learned with us, but who are no longer here except in the memories of those who knew them in life.

We will celebrate their lives through words of prayer and memory, meditation and music.

This year, we will now join the name and memory of the Reverend Dr. Peter Gomes, our spiritual classmate (Bates ’65), who in past years delighted in welcoming us and summoned us in the Call to Worship. That task will now fall to his worthy successor, the Reverend Dr. Jonathan L. Walton, the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and the Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church. Classmates Nancy Blackmun, David Mersky, Teri Motley and Bill Saum will officiate. The special music in our service will be provided by classmates Phillip Moll, Yuko Takemichi Moll, Ursula Oppens and Allan Vogel.

Attendees who wish to read the names of specific deceased classmates must arrive at the church by 8:30 a.m. At 8:45 a.m., the remaining cards will be handed out randomly
